Coaching FAQs

What is coaching and how can it help me?

Coaching takes you on a journey that supports you to make positive changes in your life, or work towards specific goals and aspirations. Through a combination of conversational change and NLP processes, I guide you through the process of creating deep and lasting change by playing the roles of motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Coaching is also a healing process because it helps you to confront issues that have been holding you back and preventing you from creating a reality you love to be in. By facing what has been limiting you, you then make space to introduce new habits, thoughts and beliefs that better serve the person you want to be and the life you want to live.

Why do people choose to have coaching?

People come to me for coaching for a variety of reasons, but it is mostly because they are dissatisfied with how life feels in that moment. Even if they don’t know what is causing the sense of unfulfillment or how to change it, they just know that where they are doesn’t feel good. During a free consultation, we uncover and explore what you really need and how to get the most out of the coaching experience.

Here are some common reasons people have come to me for coaching:

  • To discover more of who they are.

  • To understand their purpose in life.

  • To find out what they actually want, and then create it.

  • To learn how to honour their own needs and wishes.

  • To feel more confident and increase their self-esteem.

  • To navigate through big changes in their life.

  • To make decisions about their career.

  • To reduce overwhelm and stress.

What I don't do as a coach...

Tell you what to do

I believe you are the expert of your life. My role is to create shifts within you that move things out of the way so you can see the answers more clearly and access your internal resources more easily.

Whilst coaching is not mentoring, there is a mentoring aspect to it at times, which may involve me seeking permission to offer suggestions, from which you can take what you need and leave the rest.

Aggressively push you into action
I don’t believe in harsh accountability, not unless someone specifically requests that from me (but that’s rare!)

At the beginning of the coaching relationship we discuss what approaches motivate and de-motivate you, and agree on how you’d like me to hold you accountable for what you commit to doing (or not doing) as you move forward. If something is getting in the way of you taking action, we look at it together with curiosity and compassion, and then help you get unstuck.

What typically happens during a coaching session?

Coaching is what you might describe as conversational change. You are taken on a journey of exploration using strategic and intuitive questioning that helps you discover, explore and reflect in order to move forward.

Personal change and growth is by no means a linear process, so as your coach I focus on what is going on in your world, and I meet you there. All that is required of you is to show up as you are, and be committed to working through what comes up.

What happens during the coaching consultation?

The initial consultation is about establishing if we are a good fit, but also making sure my style of coaching is most appropriate for you. What’s really important in the coaching relationship is trust, so the connection has to be there, you have to make sure you are working with the right coach.

We spend about 30-45 minutes together to explore what prompted you to consider coaching, and establishing what you would like the outcome of your coaching journey to be, where you want it to take you. Then we talk about moving forward.

What is NLP?

NLP is neuro linguistic programme, which is all about the power of the unconscious mind and the study of subjective experience. “Neuro” is our neurological processes, “linguistic” is the power of language and the impact it has on our experiences, and “programming” is how those neuro and linguistic processes come together to impact how you experience life.

We all have completely different views and experiences of the world. We have beliefs and programming and conditioning from our younger years and beyond, that impact how we see the world and our potential within it, as well as what we feel about ourselves. NLP is the study of what is going on beyond the surface of your conscious mind, to see what ‘wiring’ exists there that doesn’t serve you. 95% of our thoughts, actions and behaviours are driven by our unconscious mind so when you’re looking to change thoughts, actions and behaviours it pays to work at the unconscious level to create change. Change using NLP looks at that wiring to rewire it to a more helpful way of being in the world. It creates a whole new awareness of your past, present and future.
