The Call to Change: The Intriguing Journey of Leadership Evolution

leadership personal growth the power of coaching

Introduction:

Throughout this month's video series, there is a consistent theme – the concept of growth and the inherent discomfort that accompanies it. As one of my videos points out, "The magic you're looking for is in the work you're avoiding." Another video, titled "the formula for leadership success," emphasises the synergy required among various elements for genuine growth to take place. This blog post takes a deep dive into the transformative process of change, exploring the steps needed to prepare for it and how to seamlessly integrate and evolve through it.

Step 1: Mirror of Reality - The Power of Becoming Aware

Initiating the journey of change starts with a crucial first step – awareness. Often sparked by discomfort, change becomes imperative when confronted with challenges that seem insurmountable or when a recurring theme in smaller issues points to the need for a shift. Signs may come from within your team too such as declining team morale, practice stagnation, or a noticeable lack of innovation.

The initial step involves raising your awareness of these challenges, understanding how you currently approach them, and recognising your feelings surrounding them. Ultimately, it's about acknowledging that change is necessary to overcome current challenges and progress forward.

Step 2: Inward Odyssey - Reflecting for Inner Transformation

After acknowledging the necessity for change, it's time for reflection. Instead of fixating on the "how" of problem-solving, turn inward and ask, "Who do I need to become to overcome this challenge?" This form of introspection centres on internal changes before venturing into external actions. Posing questions like "How is this challenge happening for me?" and "What is this challenge trying to teach me?" guides the reflective process.

Step 3: Desire's Magnetic Force - Creating the Pull for Change

A crucial yet often underestimated step is generating a genuine desire for change. While discomfort serves as an initial motivator, sustaining personal change requires a compelling reason or "pull." Take, for instance, a weight loss goal: shedding 10lbs is a starting point, but defining why you want it – such as feeling more confident – creates a deeper motivation. In leadership, a desire for change becomes the fuel pushing you through the inevitable growing pains of personal development.

Step 4: The Hero's Quest - Doing the Work for Personal Evolution

Armed with awareness and a strong desire for change, the time then comes to take action. The hero's journey, as illustrated by Joseph Campbell, demonstrates the challenges encountered during personal growth – a breakdown before the breakthrough. Doing the work involves conquering internal demons, dismantling outdated beliefs, and expanding consciousness. Having a guide, mentor, or coach is paramount during this phase, as they will offer vital support and insights that make the journey more manageable.

Conclusion:

Personal growth unfolds as a transformative journey requiring awareness, reflection, a genuine desire for change, and dedicated effort. It's not a solitary path; finding a guide or mentor accelerates the growth cycle. Embrace the call to grow, start the journey now, and ensure you take the right person with you. Remember, your leadership will grow as quickly as you do, so don’t be afraid to answer the call to grow.
