Work life balance - what's really going on?

"To the world, I was happy, but I wasn't. I didn't know who I was. I didn't know how to exist outside of a work setting. Whenever I had spare time, I didn't know what to do with it because I wasn't connected at all with my true needs and desires. I was living like a machine."
 
Your work life balance is out of sync because of the nature of your work as a veterinary professional, yes. But, it's often too easy to look at the obvious causes from our external environment and place blame there.
 
What else is going on here?
 
Why haven't you made changes in your external environment to create a better work-life harmony? Because once you've fixed that, everything will be ok, right? 
 
Sometimes, that's not the case. 
 
Intellectually, you know what you need to do to create a way of life that fits for you. But whatever is happening for you mentally and emotionally has put a big old spanner in the works. Achieving work life harmony is not just about what's going on "out there", it's about what's going on in your inner world too.

  • Is your mindset in the right place to compel and motivate you towards your goal?
  • Do your professional and personal boundaries serve and honour your true needs and desires?

  • Do you know what you need to do but don't start because you think you might fail, so there's no point in trying anyway?
It's so easy to push this kind of thinking to one side, keep your head down and carry on. But at some point, something has to give. And it's often not pretty when it does!
