You Don’t Need More Leadership Training

leadership personal growth the power of coaching

If you’re a vet, nurse, or Practice Manager in a leadership role and feeling like there’s more you want to do and more value you would like to add to your team, then you may be thinking about investing in further leadership training.

But what if it’s not more training you need?

Veterinary professionals have a thirst for knowledge, you love updating your knowledge and learning new, cool stuff. But I sometimes find that craving for training is more of a habit than anything else. It’s what you’re used to, and if you’re not learning you can automatically think you’re stagnating. Doing more training gives you the “hit”.

I too made this mistake in my career. Starting this work 10 years ago I found that every training I completed didn’t feel enough. I quickly developed an obsession for books, taking in knowledge, investing in courses, and I learned a lot, but more knowledge is not what I needed, I was just using it to avoid doing what I really needed to do, which was to take bold, courageous action and grow by doing, reflecting, and learning.

Old Habits Die Hard

I’ve done plenty of training courses over the years where I’ve learned lots of new things just to inadvertently fall back quickly into old habits and routines, because traditional training courses don't challenge your belief system, your thinking, or create new behaviours. You learn new shiny things in a contrived environment only to find that inserting those models or concepts into real life scenarios particularly challenging, so it's easy to let the new stuff slide and stick with what you know.

Training helps you learn new things, but it doesn’t always take care of the critical part of growth as a leader which is UNLearning. There needs to be coaching, follow up, accountability, and a place to be vulnerable with like-minded leaders to express what comes up for you.

Your Leadership Will Grow As Quickly As You Do

You don’t need more leadership training; you need leadership growth. And those shifts have to start within you.

When you have your thinking challenged, your blind spots identified, your values and strengths put under the magnifying glass, when you UNlearn what no longer serves you or the people you lead, then you will think and feel differently, and subsequently show up differently. When you show up differently, you create results that you could not create before.
