You’re not going to delegate your way out of this…
One of the things people come to me wanting, more than anything, is to be able to “switch off”. I have to say, it's always been a desire of mine too.
The shared problem with leaders is not knowing HOW to switch off. How can you, when you have a to-do list that just keeps breeding, PLUS an anticipatory list of things that haven’t happened yet (but might), AND another running through what to do if those things actually do happen?
I know all too well what happens when you actually do get to sit down for a minute on your own, peacefully. There’s nothing peaceful about it. You’ve just created space for the other 100,000 thoughts that have been sitting in the background all day.
Another thing about the ability to switch off - do you actually, really want to? 🤔
Because if you switched off, what would happen? Would something get missed?
You know if you drop that very fragile ball, picking up the pieces is going to take even more time and energy than you have. 😩
You might think this is a boundary issue, or a delegation issue. More often than not, it’s because being this involved is what makes you feel SAFE.
It’s actually a letting go problem…
And honestly, that's a really tricky and uncomfortable thing to take a closer look at.
