The 5 Pillars of Inspirational Veterinary Leadership

I see a future where the veterinary profession ranks first for professional and personal fulfilment and wellbeing, and I believe veterinary leaders have the power to set that standard by being the change they want to see in the profession.

In order to step up and have a big impact as a leader, you need to master the 5 Pillars of Inspirational Leadership:

1) Energy and Flow

Energy management is the new time management!

If you can connect with the people, places, things, situations, habits, or behaviours in your life that fill you and drain you, you can take steps to manage your energy to ensure you’re not overcommitted and under-resourced. It means you will:

  • Show up as the best version of you.
  • Be more present as a leader.
  • Accelerate the trust, respect, engagement, and fulfilment of your employees.
  • Maintain your sparkle and avoid burnout.
  • Develop the stamina to take your practice and the wider profession through the next phase of change.

2) Identity, Values, and Authenticity

If you can develop a clear sense of who you are, connect with and live out your values, and do so in a way that is true for you, you will:

  • Make it easier to connect with who you are, and easier to connect with others.
  • Be more memorable and have a BIGGER impact as a leader.
  • Use your values as a compass to guide your leadership.
  • Reduce decision fatigue by making values-led, meaningful decisions.
  • Live the truth of who you are as a leader, not who you think you SHOULD be.
  • Establish who you want to be, and develop the thoughts, actions & behaviours to bridge the gap.

 

3) Focus, Structure, and Accountability

Focus, structure, and accountability are the three things you need to create a practice that runs smoothly, with a happy team and happy clients. If structure, focus, and accountability are in harmony, you will:

  • Get more done in less time.
  • Take the right action, at the right time.
  • Feel less chaotic, and more productive.
  • Eliminate overwhelm.
  • Stop the busy work.
  • Prioritise what matters.

4) Recruitment Game

This could be one of the biggest headaches for leaders in the profession right now, which is why it has its place in the 5 pillars of inspirational leadership.

Recruitment is hard because it requires more time and attention than people are willing to give it, so the secret to successful recruitment is to do what others won’t do, and you’ll get different results.

If you get good at the game, you will:

  • Attract vets and RVNs that other practices don't have access to.
  • Build your DREAM team.
  • Reduce recruitment fatigue by spending more time with the right people.
  • Eliminate costly recruitment mistakes.

5) Self-Mastery

Self-mastery is about leading yourself before you lead others effectively.

It matters because the foundation to inspirational leadership is self-awareness. This means identifying all your blind spots and having a continuous commitment to doing so. It’s about looking at what stories and excuses you use to justify certain behaviours, or the excuses you use to not do things. It’s about sharpening your mindset, ensuring you have a growth mindset, and expanding your self-development and team coaching toolbox.

Ultimately if your team is a reflection of you, YOU are going to determine the results of your practice.

Your impact as a leader will grow as quickly as you do!
